Physical Education

New Horizons aims to deliver a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. Our intention is to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Every child matters and in order to engage every pupil in physical activity it’s important to offer a variety of sports and activities to suit all. Due to the small number of pupils we have at New Horizons, it is difficult to deliver team game activities therefore the majority of the games are individual sports. This year these include:- Gymnastics, Rock Climbing, Boxing, Trampolining, Driving Range, Circuit Training, Fitness Sessions, Table Tennis and Dodgeball to name but a few.

With these highly varied activities we have successfully been able to engage every single pupil at New Horizons and will therefore continue to deliver these activities next year.

For those students deciding to choose PE as a GCSE will be required to complete a practical assessments as well as a written exam. This will be divided as follows:-

Written Paper – 1 hour 30 mins: 80 marks – 40%

Controlled Practical Assessment: 90 marks – 60%

In addition to pupils participating in physical activity, we also offer them the chance to develop their leadership skills through the delivery of Sports Leaders Level 2 Award. Sports Leaders is a fun and practical course that focuses on leading rather than technical ability and is a potential stepping stone into employment, further education or training. This is a chance for the pupils to be creative, to think outside the box and plan, lead and deliver their own sessions to the KS2 pupils.

This year we entered 5 pupils for their GCSE exam which is 3 more than the previous year and next year our aim will be to enter a minimum of 8 pupils.
